2006 International Civil Society Summit
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the ratification of the Desertification Convention, the year 2006 was declared the International Year to Combat Desertification. A decade after the fight against desertification was given a formidable instrument offering many hopes and possibilities, it was still poorly understood by stakeholders.
For the first time since the negotiations and entry into force of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, a forum bringing together a significant sample of civil society actors from all continents has expressed itself unequivocally on this serious problem to the attention of citizens, scientists and decision makers. Meeting in Montpellier (France) from 21 to 23 September 2006, this meeting was the first of a long series that was relaunched in 2015.
