A first edition to celebrate 10 years of the Desertification Convention!
To mark the 10th anniversary of the ratification of the Desertification Convention, 2006 was declared the International Year to Combat Desertification. A decade after the fight against desertification was given a formidable instrument offering many hopes and possibilities, it was still poorly understood by the parties involved.
For the first time since the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification was negotiated and came into force, a forum bringing together a significant cross-section of civil society players from every continent has spoken out unequivocally on this serious problem for the benefit of citizens, scientists and decision-makers. Held in Montpellier (France) from 21 to 23 September 2006, this meeting was the first in a long series that was relaunched in 2015.
