Book: "Sécheresse et agroécologie : essayons d’y voir clair"

This document stems from a desire to make scientific knowledge regarding the benefits of agroecology in drought management accessible. It is based on a more comprehensive literature review produced by Isabelle Amsallem for CARI, offering an educational, action-oriented interpretation of that review for those working on the ground day-to-day.

Without claiming to be as comprehensive as a scientific report, it seeks to bridge the gap between research and practice, shedding light on the practical challenges of drought management through the lens of agroecology. The aim is to demonstrate, in a clear and practical manner, how agroecological approaches can strengthen the resilience of agricultural systems and rural communities in the face of current and future crises.

Recommendations notes

As part of the preparatory work for Désertif’actions 2026, 25 workshops were organised by all the partners, and four international webinars brought together nearly 350 people. This preparatory phase explored the following sub-themes, all of which are intended to contribute to the central theme of regional resilience to drought:

  • Supporting the agroecological transition (Agroecology to equip agricultural systems to cope with drought)
  • Facilitating pastoral mobility (No pastoralism without mobility: challenges and proposals)
  • Improving multi-stakeholder water resource management (Working together to build water security: an imperative)
  • Strengthening the role of local authorities (Strengthen the role of local authorities in building the resilience of territories to drought)

An analysis of the results, grouped by sub-theme during the preparatory phase, has enabled us to identify the key recommendations, which are summarised in the recommendation notes available here.

UNCCD Explanatory Notes

These three briefings on the negotiations for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification are intended for participants and CSOs who are following the UNCCD and wish to influence it.

  • The briefing note on the UNCCD negotiation process explains in detail how and by whom UNCCD decisions are adopted. The note identifies entry points for influencing the negotiations and provides recommendations for CSOs attending the COP.
  • This analysis of regional groups and influential coalitions within the UNCCD complements the previous note by detailing how UNCCD negotiators organise themselves to exert influence in the negotiations. It helps to refine our understanding of how advocacy targets operate.
  • The briefing note on the consideration of droughts in UNCCD negotiations details the Convention’s efforts to combat droughts and summarises the latest developments in the negotiations on this issue.

Cross-sectional report on the drought questionnaire

This online survey gathered information on the mechanisms and tools used to tackle droughts before, during and after drought events.

The responses provided a better understanding of existing mechanisms and directly informed the discussions and work of Désertif’actions 2026, with a view to advocacy at COP17. They will help to identify priorities for action to strengthen the resilience of regions to droughts.
