D’a15 – Land degradation and climate change: Time to act!
At the very heart of Montpellier, in 2015, the 2nd edition of Désertif’actions gathered 300 participants to deal with climate and land issues under the motto “Stand for your lands NOW!”
A week from June 17 combat against desertification international day, this edition has gathered 300 international development actors from 57 countries. It was articulated around 28 plenary interventions, 10 workshops focused on 3 main topics : “Desertification and land degradation challenges”, “the issue of the Rio’s conventions synergy”, “the need for a plural organized civil society”.
2015 : a major deadline… a challenge for France
After a year dedicated to family farming, (a crucial factor for a better land management), 2015 is characterized by decisive deadlines for international governance that is linked with sustainable land management and its impact on food security, climate and global security. Given this international agenda that offers a conducive context for action, civil society wants to believe in this opportunity.
Désertif’actions 2015 is an answer to this will of action. Organized by CARI association, the summit was a preparatory stage for Desertification Convention (COP12) in Ankara, and for Climate Convention (COP21) held in Paris in December of the same year.
A plurality of activities
Since April 2015, a collection of stakeholders views was organized:
- 13 country-workshops gathered around 400 people
- A trilingual e-forum involving 380 people from 46 countries
En parallèle du sommet, 3 projections-débats ont été organisées dans un cinéma montpelliérain afin de donner la parole au grand public sur des thématiques qui nous concernent tous : la terre et le climat. Ces moments de rencontres et d’échanges avec des acteurs de terrains (ONG, scientifiques, collectivités locales, institutions…) ont attiré plus de 320 personnes.
In the same time, 3 screening-debates have been organized in a theater from Montpellier to give the public the microphone on topics that touches us all: land and climate. These exchanges moments with field actors (NGO, scientists, local communities, institutions…) gathered more than 320 people.
On the June 13th, more than 4000 people enjoyed the Desertif’actions village through its animations, poetry, dances, exhibitions.
Key moments : 2 public debates gathered more than 120 people, the March dedicated to “Land and Climate” was attended by around 400 people and 2 free concerts at night brought together 2500 people.

For this 2nd edition of Désertif’actions, we received 80 drawings from 44 artists from 20 countries. The 30 best drawings were used for UNCCD’s awareness campaign and published in a collector book.
Sharing Désertif’actions outcomes in international meetings
Outcomes of Désertif’actions 2015 are enshrined in a declaration that was defended in the Conferences of Parties (COP) of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (Ankara) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (Paris).
